This Landmark Award recognizes not only the vitality of the park,  but its astounding economic impact on the city of Atlanta.  Over $1 billion has been invested in the blocks surrounding the park,  including many residential highrises, that have brought people to live downtown after decades of being for employment uses and hotels.  The Georgia Aquarium, World of Coca Cola, and the Civil Rights museums have located across the street and given a civic presence to this part of downtown. Crownsville Memorial Park: ASLA National Award of Excellence: President’s Award; ASLA Potomac Chapter: Honor Award; ASLA Maryland Chapter; 2025.

The master plan for Crownsville Memorial Park won three awards in 2025 for  the  plan that recognized the history of a now closed mental health facility and proposed a park with healing as its central focus. The National Award of Excellence and the President’s Award are both discretionary awards,  and only given to a project that rises above the rest of the submissions.  The jury noted that the park plan should become a national model for the sensitive treatment of the land and its history ,  so that visitors may come to appreciate the stories of the people who lived and died on the site.
